Gano Forum president and convener of Jatiya Oikyafront Dr Kamal Hossain suggested on Saturday that BNP do politics sans Jamaat for the sake of national unity.

"I never do politics with Jamaat. I will not do that in future. BNP should leave Jamaat out for the sake of national unity… and we can say this right now," he told the media at a press briefing at its Arambagh party office in the capital.

The eminent jurist, who is also convener of Jatiya Oikyafront, said that it was their mistake to see Jamaat contest election alongside the Oikyafront.

"When I gave my consent for forming the Oikyafront, I was not aware (forgot) about Jamaat," he added.

He also said that he was totally in the dark about nominating 25 Jamaat candidates to contest the just-concluded parliamentary election.

He termed the move a blunder or mistake to take part in the election with Jamaat.

"I want to say it very clearly that we will not do politics with Jamaat. I guess BNP may be pressurised to leave Jamaat," he said. He, however, said if the government thinks of the country's interests and has respect for the Constitution, they could hold another election within two or three months.

He said the consensus among the people of the country on fundamental issues was yet to be built.

He said there was no disagreement over holding the parliamentary election in a free, fair and transparent manner.

"You (media) have seen what happened on December 30," he said. Gano Forum general secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu in a written statement said, "We must strengthen Jatiya Oikyafront by correcting errors".

He admitted that there might be some errors committed due to the hasty formation of the Oikyafront.

The Gano Forum will hold national council on March 23 and 24 in the capital.
