Cabinet body approves import of urea

The cabinet committee on government purchase on Wednesday approved a proposal put forward by the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) to import 80,000 tonnes of urea fertiliser.

These fertilisers will be procured from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company Limited (KAFCO). The procurement will cost the exchequer Tk 1.73 billion.

The approval was given at a virtual meeting of the committee, chaired by finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, cabinet division additional secretary Dr Abu Saleh Mostafa Kamal said of the total, 25,000 tonnes of bulk prilled urea fertilizer will be imported from Muntajat (Qatar Chemical and Petrochemical Marketing and Distribution Company).

The BCIC will import 25,000 tonnes of bulk granular urea fertiliser from Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC). The rest of 30,000 tonnes of bagged granular urea fertilizer will be bought from KAFCO.

The committee also approved a proposal made by the energy and mineral resources division for appointment of international consultancy firms for 2D seismic project at a cost of Tk 137 million.

Besides, it approved a variation proposal for re-appointment of Japanese consultancy firm Nippon Koei Co Ltd for a project of the water resources ministry.

In addition, the committee approved a proposal for awarding jobs for road construction in Cox's Bazar district which will cost the exchequer Tk 2.73 billion.
