Participants at a workshop on 'Regional Cooperation in Higher Education, Particularly Student Exchange, Teacher Training, and Research' held in the city on Tuesday.

Senior Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division Siddique Zobair has emphasised the need to ensure quality education in all universities in the country to attract more foreign students.

He made the remark while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop titled 'Regional Cooperation in Higher Education, Particularly Student Exchange, Teacher Training, and Research' on Tuesday, says a statement.

The workshop was held at a hotel in the capital under the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) Project, which is being implemented by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Zobair said that there are public and private universities and specialised institutions in the country. Unless the quality of education is ensured, a greater number of foreign students will not be interested in pursuing higher education in the country.

He further emphasised the need to improve the research environment in universities.

If both quality education and a strong research culture can be ensured, Bangladeshi universities will be able to secure respectable positions in various international rankings, he added.

UGC Chairman Professor Dr SMA Faiz presided over the workshop while UGC Members Dr Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossain, and Dr Md Saidur Rahman, and Additional Secretary (Development) of the Ministry of Education Md Humayun Kabir spoke as special guests.

TM Asaduzzaman, Senior Education Specialist at the World Bank, also spoke at the workshop.
