The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have set the maximum age limit at 30 years for the candidates of long-awaited DU Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and hall union elections.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the DU syndicate on Tuesday, with Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.

Students who got enrolled at the university through entry tests for honours courses and are currently studying at undergraduate, postgraduate or Master of Philosophy level are eligible to join the fray.

The syndicate, however, did not bring any changes regarding the issue of setting up polling centres at the residential halls, although most of the student organisations have been demanding that polling centres be set up outside the halls this time to ensure a free and fair election.

The syndicate created some new posts and upgraded some other posts in line with the demands placed by the student organisations.

It also decided that the students of evening and other courses and Doctor of Philosophy programme and affiliated colleges could not take part in the election.

Earlier, the university authorities appointed Prof SM Mahfuzur Rahman of the International Business department as the chief returning officer and formed a 15-member Advisory Council to take preparations for the polls.

The DUCSU polls are being held for the first time in 28 years.
