December 03, 2025 00:00:00

Police have submitted chargesheets in 106 cases related to killings and violence during the July Uprising across Bangladesh, reports bdnews24.com.

Out of these cases, 31 are for murder and 75 fall under other sections, as stated by the Police Headquarters in a media statement on Tuesday.

The statement did not specify the dates when the chargesheets were submitted.

The 31 murder cases are registered in various districts such as Pabna, Sirajganj, Bogura, Dhaka, Narayanganj, Cumilla, Chandpur, Feni, Kurigram, and Sherpur, as well as with PBI, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Chattogram Metropolitan Police, and Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The remaining 75 cases are spread across districts like Pabna, Sirajganj, Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Bogura, Dhaka, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Tangail, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Sherpur, Jamalpur, Mymensingh, and Barguna, involving PBI, CID, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Barishal Metropolitan Police, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Chattogram Metropolitan Police, and Rangpur Metropolitan Police.

Police are continuing investigations into other cases to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The statement also mentioned that interim investigation reports have been submitted to courts for 2,830 individuals in 437 cases related to the Anti-discrimination Student Movement under Section 173(A) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The movement in 2024 initially called for quota reform in government jobs but eventually led to the government's overthrow.

Starting at Dhaka University, the protest quickly spread to other educational institutions nationwide.

The government at the time responded with bullets, tear gas shells, and batons, attempting to control the situation by first blocking Facebook and then the internet, but these measures were unsuccessful.

With aheavy toll of lives and bloodshed, the Awami League government, which had been in power for fifteen years, was overthrown within 20 days of the movement's beginning, causing Sheikh Hasina to flee the country.

The interim government's report lists 834 deaths from the Uprising.

A United Nations investigation suggests that over 1,400 people may have been killed between July 1 and August 15.
