China's top political advisory body sat here Saturday to arm President Xi Jinping with latest strategies for building a 'great modern socialist country' with care for wellbeing of humanity.

"We will focus our advice and efforts on the main issues in securing a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and embarking on a journey to fully build a modern socialist China," said Chairman of the 12th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee Yu Zhengsheng.

"We will deepen CPPCC's ties with our friends from abroad, promote the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and contribute to the building of a community with a shared future for humanity," he told the gathering of policy advisers of China which, nowadays, is spreading its wings across the world with its economic might.

He was making policy briefs at the outset of the conference in a work report before a 2,149-strong political advisors' gathering, setting the tone of the strategies China will be pursuing in the next course under Xi's secure leadership for a longer term.

The members of advisory body gathered at the Great Hall of the People from across the country to discuss major political, economic and social issues in the world's most populous nation.

Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders attended the opening session, where the advisory-body chairman, Yu Zhengsheng, further said the CPPCC will promote Belt and Road Initiative -- Xi's flagship global agenda -- by building ties with friends abroad.

Summarising the work and experience over the past five years, Mr Yu said the CPPCC should remain committed to its nature as "an important platform for all Chinese political parties, social organisations, and people from all ethnic groups and all sectors of society to work together and participate in the deliberation of state affairs in a democratic manner."

He stressed that the top political advisory body shall uphold the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

On its future work plan, he said the CPPCC would give top priority to studying and applying Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and earnestly study the new thinking on and requirements for the patriotic united front and the CPPCC.

"We will promote the ready acceptance of the leadership of the CPC among all political parties, social groups, and people of all ethnic groups and from all social sectors that participate in the CPPCC, and firmly uphold the core position of General Secretary Xi Jinping," he noted.

He said the CPPCC would consolidate a shared political foundation for concerted efforts, sharpen the political advisors' skills across the board, and improve the institutions, standards and procedures for the performance of its functions.

In a report on proposals, vice chairperson of the 12th CPPCC National Committee Wan Gang said over the past five years, a total of 29,378 proposals had been submitted by the CPPCC National Committee members, and 99 percent of them had been handled up to Feb 20 last.

The first session of the 13th National People's Congress, the national legislature of China, also commences March 5. These two meetings of two top bodies combined are called 'the two sessions'.

There are presently 2,980 deputies who have been elected by people's congresses of provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities and special administrative regions of China for a period of five years.

Around 3,000 foreign and local media personnel have gathered in Beijing to cover the event of China preparing itself organisationally and legally for the next course of action on national and global planes.

This year's two sessions drew huge attention from across the world as a number of constitutional amendments, including the scrapping of presidential two-term limit and forming new supervisory body to watch top-level corruption, are being made at the NPC, according to various media reports.
