The Chinese government on Sunday sent members from the Chinese National Emergency Medical Team to Dhaka to provide quality treatment and healthcare to the persons wounded during the recent mass uprising.

"This is the first Chinese emergency medical team coming to Bangladesh since the establishment of the interim government, which highlights excellent bilateral relations and is a testimony of China's support to the present government," the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen said to the media after receiving the medical team at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital.

Sheikh Sayidul Haque, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services, was also present with him. A brief and solemn welcoming ceremony was held at the airport.

The team is composed of the West China Hospital's physicians, who are experts in general surgery, trauma care, orthopaedics, rehabilitation, critical care, and ophthalmology among other fields of medical speciality. The hospital is known as one of the country's best.

China sent the medical team after an invitation from the interim government, Yao Wen said.

Ambassador Yao stated that many civilians suffered during the recent uprising in Bangladesh.

"The Chinese government expresses its condolences to the victims and sympathy to the families of the deceased and the injured."

"China and Bangladesh have long been supporting each other through thick and thin, and the Chinese people deeply empathise with the hardships faced by the Bangladeshi people," the envoy also said.

China will help Bangladesh assess injuries of the affected persons and provide emergency humanitarian medical assistance to them based on Bangladesh's needs, including sending more emergency medical teams to treat the patients on-site and providing necessary medical supplies, he added.

Sheikh Sayidul Haque, expressed deep gratitude to the Chinese government for sending the medical team.

"COVID-19, dengue, or floods, no matter what we are fighting against, our friends in China are always standing closely by the people of Bangladesh." Bangladesh will provide full cooperation and assistance to the medical team to help more people to recover from their injuries as soon as possible, he added.
