Uprising victims' treatment

Cornea replacement of two done successfully

FE REPORT | October 22, 2024 00:00:00

The cornea-replacement surgeries of two persons, injured during the July-August mass movement, were successfully completed at the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital (NIOH) in the capital.

The cornea transplant surgeries of Israfil and Anik, injured in the anti-discrimination student movement, were conducted on Sunday night.

Earlier, an assurance of getting 40 corneas was received from Seba Foundation, and ultra-sensitive corneal tissues from Nepal were brought to Bangladesh on an emergency flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Then, the corneas of two persons, injured during the mass movement, were transplanted for the first time.

Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum, after visiting the patients at the hospital, said the government would stand beside the anti-discrimination movement injured - from their treatment to rehabilitation.

"We have to ensure treatment of the injured in the anti-discrimination movement, and bring them out of the trauma they are going through."

In response to the questions of the journalists, the health adviser also said there are various stages of eye treatment.

The eye treatment and surgery may take one month for some patients and six months for others.

"If the condition of the eye (of a victim) is good, (his/her) corneal surgery will be done. We have enough corneas ready," she added.

At that time, NIOH Director Dr. Khair Ahmed Choudhury was present, among others.

In order to restore vision of the eye-injured victims of the mass movement, arrangements have been made to collect ultra-sensitive corneal tissue from Seba Foundation.

The health adviser earlier said over 400 people lost their visions completely and partially after being severely injured during the movement.

At least 775 people were killed and over 22,000 injured in the July-August movement, according to the health ministry data.
