A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered to freeze a bank account jointly owned by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul and her sister Sheikh Rehana, and their affiliated organisation in connection with a corruption allegation against them.
Sheikh Hasina and others deposited Tk161.25 million in the account running with the NCC Bank PLC in the name of "Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust".
Judge of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court in Dhaka, Md Zakir Hossain, passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Earlier on the day, ACC Deputy Director Md Monirul Islam, who is leading the inquiry team, submitted an application seeking freeze on the account.
In the application, the ACC official said he came to know from credible sources that Hasina and others were attempting to transfer the money elsewhere. So, an order is needed to prevent them from doing so.
ACC Public Prosecutor Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Jewel moved the application on behalf of the anti-graft body.
The same court also ordered to freeze 65 other bank accounts owned by different persons and organisations affiliated with SAlam Group.
These persons and organisations have deposit amounting to Tk13.74 billion in those accounts.
Apart from this, the court also ordered to attach several pieces of land measuring 13067.21 decimals, which have a total estimated value of Tk3.25 billion, owned by SAlam Group and its affiliated persons and organisations.
Earlier on the day, ACC Deputy Director Tahsin Mubinul Haque who is leading the inquiry team, submitted two separate applications seeking freeze on the accounts and attachment on the properties.
The pieces of land that have been ordered to be attached are in different areas of Karnaphuli, Doublemooring, Kotwali, Patiya, Baklia, Bayezid, Sitakunda, Sreepur, and Hathazari police station in Chattogram and Gazipur districts.
