Court orders confiscating assets of Shakib

FE REPORT | March 25, 2025 00:00:00

A Dhaka court on Monday ordered attaching assets owned by cricketer and former Awami League lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan in a case involving two bounced cheques at IFIC Bank.

Judge Md Ziadur Rahman of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court passed the order after hearing a petition seeking attachment of assets.

SM Alamgir Hassan, chief law officer of the IFIC Bank, confirmed the court order to the FE.

Earlier on January 19, the same court issued an arrest warrant against Shakib and another in the case. It also asked the police to submit a report by March 24 complying with the arrest-warrant order.

Police on Monday informed the court that they did not find the accused. The court then ordered confiscation of Shakib's properties.

According to the case statement, an agro farm owned by Shakib took loans from the bank's Banani branch on several occasions for business purposes.

Against the loans, the company issued two cheques of Tk 41.45 million. The cheques were dishonoured due to insufficient funds.

Later, Shahibur Rahaman, an official of the bank, filed a case against Shakib and three others.

Upon hearing the case, a Dhaka court on 18 December 2024 summoned them to appear before it on January 19.

However, Shakib and his aide did not appear before the court that day. Then the plaintiff appealed to the court to issue an arrest warrant against the duo.

Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm Ltd director Emdadul Haq and employee Malaika Begum appeared on January 19, but Shakib and the farm's managing director, Gazi Shahagir Hossain, skipped their appearance.

Accordingly, the court issued a warrant for the arrest of Shakib and Shahagir.

Last October, the IFIC Bank issued a legal notice to the agro farm of the former cricket captain, demanding repayment of an outstanding Tk 41.45-million loan.

The bank's Banani branch sent a legal notice through a national daily in accordance with the Negotiable Instruments Act.

The bank said the company must repay Tk 41.45 million within 30 working days on receipt of the notice.

If the amount is not paid within this timeframe, the bank will take legal action against Shakib's company, according to the notice.
