Covid-19 kills five more, infects 1,897 in a day

Experts raise a red flag over virus death surge

Like Covid-19 infections, the number of fatalities from the virus also shows an uptrend, triggering concern among the healthcare experts.

Bangladesh witnessed a fresh spike in coronavirus infections from early last month (June) but the death figure was zero for more than three weeks.

The country of nearly 170 million population started recounting fatalities in the fourth round of social transmission of the viral disease from the last week of June.

In the last 24 hours till Friday morning, Bangladesh recorded 1,897 new cases along with five more deaths, according to the state-run Director General of Health Services (DGHS).

The Covid-19 death numbers on June 28, June 29 and June 30 were 2, 3 and 4 respectively.

It indicates that the number of deaths keeps rising steadily.

The infection rate was 15.31 per cent as 12,389 samples were tested across the country during the period.

With the latest figures, the entire caseload has risen to 1,975,682 while the death toll climbed to 29,154.

In terms of recovery, a total of 248 people recovered from the deadly viral disease and it took the total number of recovery to 1,907,757.

Secretary general of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Dr Md Ehteshamul Huq Choudhury said the coronavirus situation has taken a turn for the worse as both infections and fatalities are on the rise.

Calling upon the people to follow required health protocols in the daily life, he said they should not take the latest spread of the transmission lightly at all.

"We have to wear masks properly wherever we go and get vaccinated. Otherwise, we might face dire consequences of the deadly virus," he added.
