CHATTOGRAM Oct 13: Work on the Chattogram City Bus Terminal at Kulgaon, being built by Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), is nearing completion by this December.
CCC chief engineer Rafiqul Islam said, "More than 75 per cent project work has already been done. I hope the total work will be completed within December."
According to the master plan of Chattogram city, there are 28 acres of land for north city bus terminal.
"We're building a city bus terminal at Kulgaon under Hathazari on 8.10 acres of land for 12 routes of North Chattogram. Later, we'll construct another terminal for South Chattogram."
Mr Islam said, "The ongoing project was approved in October 2018, but it was delayed for the outbreak of coronavirus and complexity over land acquisition."
"Now, the CCC is implementing the project at Tk 297 crore (Tk 2.97 billion). Of the total, Tk 260.5 (Tk 2.6 billion) crore was spent on land acquisition."
CCC mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said there was no permanent bus terminal in Chattogram, leading to diabolical traffic congestion frequently.
"However, the CCC is constructing the Chattogram Bus Terminal now. I hope it will be completed by the current calendar year," he told the FE.
Sources said the district administration handed over 8.16 acres of land at Kulgaon for construction of the bus terminal to the CCC last June.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved Tk 1,268 crore (Tk 12.68 billion) for construction of north and south terminals last October.
The CCC is constructing the north terminal in line with the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) master plan.
The site for terminal at Kulgaon was finalised after a coordination meeting with Roads and Highways Department, CDA, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, Chattogram Metropolitan Police and Department of Environment.
