Dengue patients’ number waning

FE Report | September 21, 2019 00:00:00

As many as 508 people were infected afresh with dengue virus in the last 24 hours until 8:00 am on Friday, showing a sharp decline in the number of patients.

Of the total, 165 were admitted to hospitals in the capital Dhaka, and 343 in other regions across the country.

The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has received a total of 203 death records, suspected to be caused of dengue, until Friday.

After examining 116 cases of death, it confirmed that 68 died of the disease, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

On the other hand, local media reported that many more people (than the official number) had died of dengue until September.

Some 2,158 people are currently being treated for dengue, and 902 of them are taking treatment at 41 public and private hospitals in Dhaka, and 1,256 are taking treatment outside Dhaka.

Of the total, the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) admitted 40 patients alone.

A total of 83,989 patients had been hospitalised since January 1. Of them, 81,628 were discharged from hospitals after recovery, which means some 97 per cent of the dengue-affected people were released.

The DGHS data showed that dengue infection started decreasing in September, while August already broke all previous records with 52,636 people infected with the virus in a single month.

The government agencies concerned have taken extra measures including emphasizing awareness, as people are found rushing to different hospitals with dengue.
