Detectives arrest six over shooting gold trader in Banasree

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested six people for their alleged involvement in the shooting and robbing of a gold trader in the capital's Banasree area last month.
The detectives also recovered the looted gold and firearms from the possession of arrestees, according to a press release issued by the DMP on Saturday.
A senior DB official involved in the operation said that the robbery was carried out by a professional gang of robbers.
He said that the gang operates both in and outside the capital, with its members spreading across different locations.
Each of the arrestees has multiple cases filed against him, said the official.
The gold trader identified as Anwar Hossain, owner of Alankar Jewellers was shot and stabbed by six armed men on three motorcycles in front of his house at Banasree on the night of February 23, 2025.
Police said Anwar Hossain was on way home after closing his shop located in the same area when he was shot at by a total of six rounds of bullets and one bullet hit him.
Anwar was initially taken to nearby Farazi Hospital and then shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
He was brought to the hospital with bullet wounds and injuries from sharp weapons.
After being taken to the hospital, Anwar told the police that he was heading home after closing his shop at night 'with 200 bhoris of gold and Tk0.1 million (once lac).
"Six people on three motorcycles tried to snatch the bag I had with me. When I tried to stop them, they shot me. They took away the gold and money," said Mr Anwar.
Rampura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ataur Rahman Akand said that the armed men first tried to snatch his belongings, but when he retaliated, a man wearing a red helmet shot him and another stabbed him and snatched away all what he had with him.
