Dhaka's open water bodies receive 230 tonnes of fecal waste daily

FE REPORT | February 26, 2025 00:00:00

UNICEF, WaterAid, SNV, and ITN-BUET highlighted the critical need for accelerated progress in sanitation and hygiene during the International Toilet Conference 2025 in Dhaka.

According to a statement, over one-third of Bangladesh's population, more than 65 million people, still lack access to safely managed sanitation.

Estimated 230 tonnes of fecal waste end up in open water bodies in Dhaka daily, leading to significant environmental pollution and serious health risks for marginalized communities, particularly children. Rana Flowers, UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh, emphasised the importance of proper sanitation for children's health and development, especially in the face of climate hazards like floods.
