The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Traffic Division on Monday carried out an eviction drive against illegal structures at Sayedabad Bus Terminal in the capital.
DMP Traffic Division (Wary circle) DC Md Azad Rahman told the FE that they had demolished 21 makeshift structures at the bus terminal and freed the footpaths and walkways.
He said that an executive magistrate of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) led the eviction drive. The drive started at around 11:00 am and continued until 3:00 pm.
Mr Md Azad Rahman said that DMP Traffic Division's drive will continue.
Earlier, the DMP issued a public notice directing the inter-district bus operators to remove unauthoried night coach counters operating within the capital, as part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion and modernise urban traffic management.
According to the notice, many inter-district bus counters have been operating without approval or valid route permits in different parts of the city.
These unauthorised activities-including roadside parking, passenger boarding and drop-off, and counter operations-are causing severe disruptions to traffic flow that lead to congestion even during night-time.
A DMP official told the FE that they (DMP) have instructed all relevant bus owners to cease such operations outside the three authorised terminals-Gabtoli, Mohakhali, and Sayedabad-within seven working days of the notice.
