FE Report

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) on Saturday urged the political parties not to go for activities ahead of the general elections that might hamper the country's economy.

"We don't want to see violence ahead of national polls for political reason," DCCI president Abul Kasem Khan told a programme titled "DCCI Mezbaan", the trade body organised at Golf Garden in the capital, marking its 60th founding anniversary.

"We call upon the political parties not to take hostage the country's economy due to political reasons. We want all parties to take part in the polls in a peaceful manner," he said.

Since its establishment in 1958, Mr Khan said, DCCI has been working relentlessly for the betterment of the country's business.

He said the country needed a huge amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) to implement the vision 2021. "Political stability is a must for attracting more FDI, which is vital for achieving the desired growth and Vision-2021 goals."

The trade body leader urged the government to rationalise the interest rates of bank loans for the sake of business and economy.

He said DCCI would arrange a programme titled "Destination Bangladesh" within the next few months in the capital to showcase Bangladesh's potentials and attract FDI.

Foreign and local entrepreneurs, economists and other stakeholders would participate in the event, which is expected to help increase foreign and local investments in the prospective sectors like infrastructure, energy, information technology and others.

President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Md Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin), president of International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICC,B) Mahbubur Rahman, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and  Exporters Association (BGMEA) Md Siddiqur Rahman and former presidents of DCCI M A Sattar, Aftab-ul Islam, Saiful Islam, MH Rahman, R Maksud Khan, Benajir Ahmed, M A Momen, Hossain Khaled, Asif Ibrahim and its members were present.
