Heavy and gusty afternoon rain drenched the capital on Sunday, bringing relief to the city-dwellers after days of sweltering heat and humidity.
The sudden downpour and winds, however, caused commuting difficulties and localised waterlogging in areas that include Jatrabari, Kamalapur, Fakirapool, Khilgaon, Malibagh, Dhanmondi, Farmgate, Tejgaon, and Shahbag. Mohammadpur, Gabtoli and Mirpur.
The sky turned dark around 4:30pm and rain accompanied by temporary squally winds swept across the city, leaving many stranded.
An official at Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) told the FE that from 4:30pm to until 6:30pm on the day, 54-millimeter rain was recorded in the capital.
On the other hand, during the last 24 hours (until 6:00pm Sunday) 58-millimeter rain was recorded in the capital.
The highest 87-millimeter rain was recorded in Dimla upazila in Nilphamari district during the last 24 hours until 6:00pm Sunday.
The Meteorological Department had previously forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers in Dhaka division as "the monsoon remains active across the country".
River ports in the Dhaka region were advised to keep precautionary measures in mind due to potential 45-60kph wind gusts.
While the rain provided welcome relief from the recent hot and humid weather, it created challenges for those out enjoying the weekend or trying to navigate the city.
According to the BMD, temperatures are expected to range between 28°C and 31°C, with further chances of precipitation carrying over into the upcoming week.
