Dr Shafiqur Rahman

Dr Shafiqur Rahman has been re-elected as the amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for a third consecutive term.

Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum, who served as the chief election commissioner overseeing the party's internal polls, announced Dr Shafiqur's name as the newly elected amir on Saturday night.

The party's central publicity and media wing confirmed the development in a press release issued on Sunday afternoon.

According to the statement, the internal voting was conducted through secret ballots by Jamaat's rukons (members) across the country between October 9 and 25.

The party's internal electoral mechanism involves a month-long voting process in which members from across the country cast their votes through secret ballots to elect the party leadership.

Dr Shafiqur was first elected as Jamaat's amir on November 12, 2019, and took oath on December 5 that year, beginning his 2020-2022 term. He was re-elected for a second term on October 31, 2022, and sworn in on November 18, extending his leadership through 2023-2025.

The latest internal election was held for the 2026-2028 term, in which Dr Shafiqur secured his third consecutive mandate as the party's chief.
