DSCC mayor suspects acts of sabotage in fire incidents

Govt plans to set up satellite fire station near Babubazar

Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sayeed Khokon directed on Saturday the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence to ascertain whether the recent incidents of fire were acts of sabotage, reports UNB.

He came up with the directive at a discussion programme on safe chemical management at the DCCI auditorium.

Sayeed Khokon suggested the businesspeople to remain alert whether anyone is staging such incidents following their misunderstanding or infighting.

FE Report adds: The DSCC mayor said the government has a plan to establish a

satellite fire station near the Babubazar Bridge in the city for taking rapid action against fire.

"A satellite fire station near the Babubazar Bridge could be established for taking rapid action against fire if needed," he added.

The meeting has also called upon the government for quick implementation of 'Chemical Palli' for averting casualties in fire incident further.

DCCI President Osama Taseer said the demand for chemical in Bangladesh is about US$ 2.5 billion annually which is increasing 08 per cent yearly.

He said about 800 types of chemicals are being sold in old parts of Dhaka.

"Nimtoli and Churihatta incidents indicate that our chemical management system is not up to the mark," he said.

He said like Hazaribag tannery industry, the chemical shops and stores in old Dhaka may be shifted out from the city upon consultation with the businessmen in old Dhaka.

Chief Chemical Management Specialist, Engineering Resource International (ERI) Engr. Sirajur Rahman presented the key note paper.

He said that businesses of about Tk 160 billion in the country is directly or indirectly related with chemicals.

Director General of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence Brigadier General Md. Sazzad Hussain, ndc was present as the special guest.
