Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has banned plying of battery-run motorised rickshaws and vans as well as the non-motorised vehicles, which were turned into motorised by installing engine, on the city streets.
DSCC Mayor Fazle Noor Taposh also warned of taking legal actions against such vehicles, if found any.
The mayor made the announcement at the inauguration ceremony of rickshaw, van, talli and horse cart registration, renewal and change of ownership at Nagar Bhaban in the city on Sunday.
The registration process will continue until 27 September at Nagar Bhaban. A public notification has been published in this regard.
"We are bringing back various non-motorised, slow-moving vehicles, including rickshaws. Our main objective is to establish discipline on the road. No non-motorised vehicle can ply the city roads without registration."
DSCC will assess the roads, on which the slow non-motorised vehicles can ply, and on which the speedy vehicles can ply.
The registration is not only a process, but also the first step of (fulfilling) the election pledges to make Dhaka a functional city. The drivers will also take registration, the mayor added.
In answering questions about possible negative impact on traffic situation due to plying rickshaws, Mr Taposh said the process of non-motorised vehicle registration had been halted for three decades.
"Isn't there any rickshaw (plying the city roads)? In reality, rickshaws are plying in Dhaka, but illegally. Through the registration process, these non-motorised vehicles will be brought under control," he added.
It was known that there are 52,712 registered non-motorised vehicles in DSCC area. But the number of illegal non-motorised vehicles is approximately 0.6 million.
