DU students demonstrate against corruption and forgery

Movement foiled by BCL attacks allegedly -- one student injured

The Dhaka University (DU) students of several groups under the banner of "DU against corruption and forgery" on Wednesday was attacked around 12:30 pm allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists.

The protesters were demonstrating with their demands in front of the Faculty of Business Studies.

One of the demonstrators, Asif Mahmud, a second-year student of Department of Linguistics, was injured in the attack under his left eye and was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.

Asif is a fellow activist of quota reformation platform -- Bangladesh General Students' Rights Protection Council.

Left-leaning students' wings and Bangladesh General Students' Right Protection Council demonstrated with the demands of resignation of Vice-chancellor (VC) Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman and Dean of Faculty of Business Studies Prof Shibly Rubayat Ul Islam for the allegation of admitting former and current 34 BCL leaders illegally after announcing the schedule of DU Central Students' Union (DUCSU) elections, cancellation of the studentship of those students and removal of the seven elected DUCSU leaders from the Union and arrange by-election to the posts, resignation of Ruqayyah Hall Provost Dr Zeenat Huda for cheating in appointment of hall cleaners and security guard posts allegedly and removal of Hall Union vice-president (VP) and general secretary (GS) Ishrat Jahan and Sayma Promi respectively and hall Chhatra League leaders for this incident.

According to the eye-witnesses, when the protesters took the position in front of the Business Faculty Dean office, a group of BCL activists under the banner of general students attacked them.

The protesters said that most of the attackers are the followers of Saddam Hossain, DU unit BCL secretary. Sraboni Shafique Dipti, who was assaulted in the attack, also accused BCL.

The protesters also mentioned General Secretary (GS) of Mohsin Hall Union Mehedi Hasan Miraj led the attack. Safwan from Zia Hall -- a second year student of Department of International Businesses, Shakil Hossain from Zahurul Huq Hall -- a second year student of Department of Public Administration also hit the protesters. They are all the followers of Saddam Hossain and activists of BCL, the protesters added.

When asked, the attackers told that they were there to ensure discipline on the campus.

Saddam Hossain denied their allegation and said, "BCL has no connection with this incident. This is an unwanted incident that happened between two groups of students."

According to the allegations, DUCSU leaders -- Science and Technology Affairs Secretary Arif Ibne Ali, Liberation War Affairs Secretary Saad Bin Kader, Sports Secretary Shakil Ahmed Tanvir and members Nazrul Islam, Rakibul Hasan, Nipu Islam Tonni and Mahmudul Hasan and twenty seven others belonging to BCL were allowed admission to the Department of Banking and Insurance at master's level without any admission test.
