Earthquake shakes NE India, BD

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake shook the capital and other parts of the country on Wednesday, report agencies.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department says the epicentre was located in Assam, 293km northeast of Dhaka.

Effects were felt in Rangpur and other parts of Bangladesh as well.

The tremor was felt at 10:50 am, said Mominul Islam, a meteorologist of Dhaka met office.

However, the US Geological Survey traced the epicentre of the quake to 9km off from Saptagram in Assam. They measured the earthquake at 5.6 magnitude.

According to the scale of seismologists, an earthquake ranging from 5 to 5.9 is considered a moderate earthquake which can cause slight damage to buildings.
