The High Court (HC) on Monday directed the cabinet secretary to take immediate steps to ensure the security of all sculptures and murals erected and all under-construction sculptures and murals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman anywhere in the country including those in front of the freedom fighters' complex in every district as well as upazila.
At the same time, the court asked the respondents to submit a report in one month stating the progress of installing the mural of Bangabandhu in every district and upazila headquarters.
The HC bench of justices FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Shahed Nuruddin passed the order after holding hearing on a report submitted by the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs over installing mural of Bangabandhu in front of the freedom fighters complex in every district as well as upazila.
Earlier, on February 25 this year, the HC directed the government to declare March 07 as a historic national day and publish a gazette notification to this effect within a month.
The authorities were also directed to erect murals of Bangabandhu in all districts and upazilas within the Mujib Year, the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and were asked to submit a compliance report in the court within one month.
The HC bench of justices FRM Nazmul Ahasan and KM Kamrul Kader passed the order after holding hearing on a writ filed seeking the court's declaration on the March 07 as the 'national historic day'.
Complying with the court order, the liberation war affairs ministry had sent a report recently in the HC which was placed in the court on Monday.
The report said murals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and surrendering of Pakistani occupation forces are under construction at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city where Bangabandhu delivered the speech raising his finger (pointer) on March 07, 1971.
The liberation war ministry has already installed murals of Bangabandhu in 63 out of 64 districts of the country and 380 upazilas, the report mentioned.
Following a writ petition, an HC bench on November 20, 2017, issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why they should not be directed to declare March 07 as the 'national historic day' as Bangabandhu gave the historically important speech on that day.
In the rule, the court also asked the authorities concerned to show causes as to why they should not be ordered to reconstruct the stage and a sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivering the speech with waving finger at Suhrawardy Udyan where the historic speech was delivered.
Former secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Advocate Bashir Ahmed filed the petition which came to the cause-list of the HC bench yesterday.
