Former BSEC chairman Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam is sent to prison after a court hearing in Dhaka on Wednesday
A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent former chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order and set Thursday (today) as the date of remand petition hearing.
Sources said Shibli was produced before the court at around 4:30pm and the ACC sought a 10-day remand for him.
Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir represented the ACC during the hearing.
The case was filed on Wednesday against the former BSEC chief and five others on charges of receiving bribes amounting to approximately Tk 37.6 million.
The ACC filed the case against Shibli; Jabed A Matin, chairman of Monarch Holding Inc; Ariful Islam, owner of Jhin Bangla Fabrics; Israt Jahan, first assistant vice president (FAVP) of Mutual Trust Bank; Iqbal Hossain, vice president and operations manager of the same bank; and Syed Mahbub Morshed, former branch manager of the bank.
According to the case statement, Shibli allegedly received a bribe of Tk19.2 million (approximately 226,308 USD) from a company by presenting a fake house rent agreement when he was the BSEC chairman from May 17, 2020 to August 10, 2024.
Besides, he is accused of receiving another Tk18.4 million from another company through a fake product sales contract as part of an export fraud scheme.
Shibli was arrested by police from Dhanmondi Tuesday night in connection with a case filed by ACC.
Shibli, a faculty member of Dhaka University, resigned from his position on August 10 last year, just five days after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in a mass uprising.
He was initially appointed as the chairman of the BSEC in 2020 and was reappointed for a four-year term in May last year.
