The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Wednesday arrested former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal from Moghbazar area in the city.
Later, he was shown arrested in a case filed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) with the Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Media and Public Relations department of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the update. Earlier on June 22, former CEC KM Nurul Huda, who oversaw the 2018 national polls, was arrested from his Uttara residence following the case filed by BNP.
BNP filed the case on that day against 24 individuals, including three former CECs, 10 election commissioners, and top government and police officials, for their alleged role in irregularities and biasness during the national elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024.
Ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandaker and some other government officials were also made accused in the case.
A five-member BNP delegation, led by party executive committee member Salah Uddin Khan, delivered a copy of the case application to CEC AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission the same day.
The BNP alleges that in all three parliamentary elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024, their leaders and supporters were targeted with false cases, abductions, and threats. It says many were arrested or harassed so that they could not take part in the polls.
The accused in the case, according to the BNP, were involved in irregularities during the three national elections.
