Ex-employees of GP demand compensation, reinstatement

FE REPORT | February 19, 2025 00:00:00

A group of former employees of Grameenphone, one of the leading telecom operators of the country, has demanded financial and social compensation as well as reinstatement.

They also called for the cancellation of all illegal dismissal orders issued by the Grameenphone authorities. They made the demand at a press conference held at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Tuesday under the banner of "Laid-off and Deprived Grameenphone Workers Unity Council".

Convener of the council Abu Sadat Mohammad Shoyeb read out a written statement at the conference. He stated that the Grameenphone authorities must pay 5 per cent of the company's net profit from 2009 to 2012 to its laid-off and deprived employees and take punitive action against some high officials who are allegedly involved in torturing the employees.

He accused the telecom operator of violating a Supreme Court's verdict as well as disregarding labour department's directive in dealing with the former workers.

Meanwhile in a statement, Grameenphone said, "For the last couple of months, some former employees of GP have been gathering in front of the GP House, raising various demands relating to employment and benefits. To our knowledge, most of them separated from Grameenphone a long time ago and have received their lawful entitlements.

"Also, the demands that are being raised by these individuals are currently the subject of various cases before the courts. Grameenphone has high regard for the judicial system.

Therefore, any legal issues will eventually be resolved through the court proceedings.

While Grameenphone respects the right to peaceful association, these individuals illegally blocked the entry and exit points of GP premises on several days."
