Five including main accused held in Cumilla rape case

Police have arrested five people, including the main accused, involved in the rape of an expatriate's wife and spreading the video of the victim in social media, in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla district, report agencies.

On June 26 at 8 pm, Fajr Ali alias Fajr, 36, was caught and beaten by the people of the area on charge of raping the wife of an expatriate at Ramchandrapur Panchkitta village of the upazila, a press release of Police Headquarters said here today.

Later, the injured Fajr Ali fled from there. Some people present at the spot immediately recorded the video of the victim and spread it in social media, the release added.

Being informed, police from Muradnagar Police Station rushed to the spot and took legal action against the matter.

Muradnagar police arrested the main accused Fajr Ali and four others who recorded the video of the incident and spread it on social media.

Action is being taken against the four arrested people under the prevailing law.

A case has been filed with Muradnagar Police Station based on the written complaint of the victim.

UNB adds: Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul on Sunday said the government is committed to the swift trial of those who raped a 25-year-old woman after breaking into her home in Cumilla's Muradnagar.

"The Home Ministry took action immediately ... .the key suspects and others have already been arrested," he told reporters at the Foreign Service Academy, expressing government commitment to deal with the case with the highest importance.

He said like any citizen of the country, they are all saddened and outraged by this heinous crime.

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam was also present at the media briefing.

The Law Adviser said an amendment to the Code of Criminal Procedure was approved at the meeting of Council Advisers on Sunday.

He expressed the hope that many innocent people will be saved from harassment if this initiative is implemented.

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus presided over the meeting of the Council of Advisers at the Chief Adviser's Tejgaon office.
