Focus on moral education to fight corruption

ACC chief exchanges views with varsity, medical students

FE Report | February 18, 2019 00:00:00

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Iqbal Mahmood on Sunday said morality-based quality education is essential to prevent the people from committing graft.

"Money means power. That is why people run after it; nowadays corrupt people don't feel shame for running after money," he added.

"So, nothing but quality and moral education can bring back the feeling of a sense of guilt among them (corrupt)," he said while speaking at a view-exchange programme with university-level students.

The programme was organised at the ACC headquarters in the city's Segunbagicha area to take the opinions of students on 'Anti-Corruption Commission Strategy Paper-2019'.

Students from some 30 universities and medical colleges participated in the programme.

Everybody in the society is scared of the anti-graft authority, the ACC chairman said, adding that but everything cannot be achieved by creating fears.

Mentioning that education is the most important tool to prevent corruption, the ACC chief said many educational institutions are spoiling the country's education system by giving promotion to 75 per cent of the students who fail exams.

"We all should remember that there is no alternative but to ensure quality education to be leading global economy by 2030 and get benefits from demographic dividend," he added.

Citing that the conviction rate in ACC cases reached 63 per cent last year, he said the commission may not be able to reduce corruption at expected level, but it is not true that the anti-graft watchdog is doing nothing.

"Earlier, I have said it is not possible for only one organisation to prevent corruption. Collective efforts are a must to eliminate corruption from the society."

Mr Mahmood also mentioned that the ACC has put forward recommendations to the government to prevent corruption and harassment of citizens especially in the health and education sectors.

ACC commissioner Dr Md Mozammel Haque Khan, its secretary Muhammad Dilwar Bakht, and directors general Sarwar Mahmud, Muhammad Munir Chowdhury and Md Mostafizur Rahman were also present at the programme.
