Fresh flood is approaching the country's north-eastern region amid heavy rain and the onrush of upstream water from India, said the state-run Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) on Wednesday.
Water level in the Surma, Kangsha, Someshwary, Sharigowain and other rivers, excluding the Kushiyara, in Sylhet and parts of Mymensingh was rising, it added.
The FFWC forecast a rising trend of rivers for the next 48 hours in the Upper Meghna basin.
It said rivers in northern region, including Dharala, Teesta, Ghagot, Karotoa and Dudhkumar might also start to swell further within the two days.
According to the numerical weather model of Bangladesh Meteorological Department and India Metrological Department, moderate-to-heavy rain might fall in northern and north-eastern regions and in Meghalaya and Darjeeling in the next 48 hours.
Durgapur in Netrokona, Bogura, Panchagarh and Kurigram have witnessed 118 millimetre (mm), 72 mm, 64 mm and 64 mm rainfall respectively in the past 24 hours between 9:00 am on Tuesday and 9:00 am on Wednesday.
Indian districts, adjacent to Bangladesh's north and north-eastern parts also witnessed torrential rain during the period.
Shiliguri, Cherrapunji and Darjeeling in India witnessed 185 mm, 165 mm and 104 mm rainfall respectively during the period, said Indian Met office.
However, waters of the Jamuna, Brahmaputra and Padma might continue to fall until 9:00 am on Thursday.
But fresh rise in water might deal a severe blow to people in much of the north which is already grappling with the fourth spell of flooding since June.
In the past three spells between June 26 and August 31, according to agriculture ministry, some 0.258-million hectares of croplands worth Tk 15 billion were damaged in 37 districts.
More than 263 people also died in the three-month floods, according to health ministry.
