Fuel crisis leaves motorists high and dry in city

FE REPORT | April 17, 2026 00:00:00

An acute shortage of fuel in the capital intensified public suffering on Thursday, with long queues forming at filling stations and sporadic scuffles breaking out as motorists struggled to refuel.

In several areas, fuel queues grew unusually long, with lines in Ramna, Paribagh, Tejgaon, Mohakhali, and Gulshan Link Road stretching from one to two kilometres.

Pressure also remained high at filling stations in Moghbazar, Malibagh, Banasree, Hazipara, Ramna, and Paribagh, where both cars and motorcycles were seen competing for limited supply.

The long queues spilled onto major roads, often occupying entire lanes and disrupting normal traffic movement in the busy urban corridors.

Motorists queued up since early morning, in many cases hours before fuel deliveries arrived from depots.

The demand was mostly for octane, although some motorcycles were also waiting for petrol.

A visit to the Ramna Filling Station at the Matsya Bhaban intersection at around 1:30pm revealed that several hundred motorcycles and cars queued up for fuel.
