Global cases approaching 250m mark as 7.17b shots given

The overall number of Covid cases is approaching 250 million amid the global race to vaccinate masses against the infectious disease, report agencies.

According to Worldometers, the total case count mounted to 249,552,738 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,048,897 Friday evening.

More than 7.17 billion doses have been administered across 184 countries, according to data collected by Bloomberg. The latest rate was roughly 30.5 million doses a day.

The World Health Organization estimates that the pandemic's overall toll could be two to three times higher than official records, due to the excess mortality that is directly and indirectly linked to Covid-19.

A large number of the less severe or asymptomatic cases also remain undetected, despite intensified testing in many countries. On Thursday, 8,996 new deaths and 530,090 new cases were recorded worldwide.

Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were Russia with 1,192 new deaths, followed by United States with 1,158 and Bulgaria with 1,135.

The United States is the worst-affected country with 751,555 deaths from 46,334,961 cases.

After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 608,671 deaths from 21,849,137 cases, India with 459,873 deaths from 34,333,754 cases, Mexico with 289,131 deaths from 3,818,216 cases, and Russia with 244,447 deaths from 8,714,595 cases.

The country with the highest number of deaths compared to its population is Peru with 608 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Bulgaria with 368, Bosnia-Herzegovina with 357, Republic of North Macedonia with 345, Montenegro with 338, and Hungary with 322.

Latin America and the Caribbean overall has 1,523,641 deaths from 46,023,581 cases, Europe 1,418,032 deaths from 75,631,991 infections, and Asia 874,759 deaths from 56,044,674 cases.

The United States and Canada have reported 780,622 deaths from 48,056,793 cases, Africa 219,017 deaths from 8,519,500 cases, Middle East 209,590 deaths from 13,999,178 cases, and Oceania 2,875 deaths from 265,686 cases.

As a result of corrections by national authorities or late publication of data, the figures updated over the past 24 hours may not correspond exactly to the previous day's tallies.
