Hamid re-elected as President

Abdul Hamid has been re-elected the country's president for a second consecutive term, report agencies.

"As no one else was running for the presidential position, the Election Commission (EC) is announcing M Abdul Hamid as the country's next president," Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Nurul Huda told a press conference at his office in the city on Wednesday.

Earlier, Awami League (AL) nominated Abdul Hamid for his re-election as the country's President. Subsequently, Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) with party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair in a meeting finalised the nomination.

ALPB nominated Hamid for the presidency taking into account the current political situation, his long checkered political career and commitment to the country, AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader told a press briefing after the nomination.

A veteran politician, Abdul Hamid was born on January 1, 1944 in Kamalpur of Mithamoin Upazila under Kishoregonj district. He was also elected President unanimously for his first tenure in April 2013.

Nurul Huda on Wednesday met Hamid and handed over the gazette of his presidency.

A sven-member Election Commission delegation, led by the CEC, went to Bangabhaban on Wednesday evening and congratulated the President by presenting him a bouquet, said President's Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin.

He said the EC delegation also apprised President Hamid about the overall activities of the EC.
