CHITTAGONG, Jan 20: A housewife was killed allegedly by hired goons at Patiya upazila in Chittagong on Saturday following the erection of a boundary wall forcibly by the club owner's people near a four- storey building.
In protest against the killing of the housewife, thousands of local people put up barricade on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway adjacent to Patiya Upazila Health Complex, holding up traffic from 12.00 noon to 2.00 pm.
Officer-in-charge of Patiya Police Station Md Neyamat Ullah said the agitated people
withdrew the barricade as the police officers, headed by Additional SP of Police (south) of Chittagong AKM Emran Bhuiyan, assured them that the killers would be arrested as soon as possible.
OC Neyamat Ullah said the miscreants beat Joynab Begum (40), wife of Nurul Alam, owner of the 4-storey building, with iron rods, leaving her dead on the spot around 10.30 am on Saturday.
Several dozens of people hired by Gazi Abu Taher, brother of club's owner Gazi Md Aslam who is now in a Middle East country, beat her up as she protested the construction of the boundary wall, the police officer said.
She was taken to the upazila health complex where the attending doctors declared her dead. The boundary wall was erected illegally earlier, but it was demolished by the residents of the 4-storey building.
Gazi Abu Taher, also senior vice president of Patiya Upazila BNP, constructed the wall again on Saturday in presence of the outsiders hired by him. A case has been filed with the police station in this connection.
The body has been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
