Jamaat Ameer collapses during rally speech, hospitalised

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman collapsed on stage while addressing a party rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 5:15pm during the rally, which was attended by a large crowd, including senior Jamaat leaders, representatives from various political parties and organisations, and families of those killed or injured in the recent July protests.

Dr Shafiqur was briefly assisted to his feet by party members after he first fell ill but collapsed again shortly afterwards. After receiving first aid at the venue, he completed his speech while seated.

Following the incident, he was taken to Ibn Sina Hospital in Shankar, Dhaka, for further treatment.

Later in the evening, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited the hospital to check on the Jamaat chief. The visit was confirmed by BNP media cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan, who said Fakhrul arrived at the hospital around 8:00pm.
