Japan to back BD in resolving Rohingya crisis

Japan has assured Bangladesh of its support to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

The assurance came when the envoy of Japan met Foreign Minister Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen at the latter's office in the city on Sunday.

During his meeting with Japanese Ambassador Naoki Ito, the foreign minister sought Japan's strong support in resolving the Rohingya crisis.

Stressing the need for ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the region, Dr. Momen requested the Japanese envoy to leverage Japan's relations with Myanmar to create an environment conducive to an early, safe, sustainable and dignified repatriation of 1.1 million Rohingy as, a spokesperson of the foreign ministry said.

In response, the ambassador referred to Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi's recent visit to Myanmar where he called upon the Myanmar authorities for an early repatriation of Rohingya and assured that his government would continue to pursue the matter.

Japan reiterated its position on repatriation at the Conference on Sustaining Support for the Rohingya Refugee Response held on 22 October, he added.

The foreign minister appreciated Japan's continued support for strengthening infrastructural and socio-economic development of Bangladesh.

In this context, he urged Japanese entrepreneurs to invest in two special economic zones in Araihazar (Narayanganj) and Gazipur.

Dr. Momen also called upon Japanese businesses to take advantage of Bangladesh's high corporate profitability, business-friendly policies, massive domestic market and strategic access to key markets across the world.
