Jute ministry seeks cash incentives for 49 more diversified products

The ministry of textiles and jute has urged the finance ministry to provide cash incentives to 49 more diversified products.

The jute ministry sent a letter with the request and a list of proposed products to the finance division on Wednesday last.

Presently, 232 diversified jute goods exporters receive 20 per cent cash subsidy. Besides, the jute yarn exporters and hessian exporters get 7.0 per cent and 12 per cent cash incentives respectively.

The proposed products include magazine holder, chandelier, work station panel, curtain cover, neck tie, watch box, floor slipper, file holder, CD holder, instrument box, pet animal toys, sportsman's bags, harmonium bags, door stopper, fender, curtain tie, jute festoon, jute banner, prayer cap, sock, door bell, scarf, tissue hanger, comb basket, jute bonsai, jute boat, jute fruits, jute paper, decorative bottle, sonali bag, hair clip, waist bags, chess board, painting, saree, jute denim, shirt, punjabi, decorative fruit box, stool, fish mirror, hot carrier, spoon stand and mobile stand.

Exporters said if these products get entitled for cash subsidy, they will feel encouraged to ship more jute products, thereby promoting the sector.

At present, a total of 36 export-oriented sectors are receiving cash incentives on their export earnings. In the current fiscal, the government has decided to provide a total of Tk 45 billion in cash incentives to the exporters.

About 200 entrepreneurs are producing diversified jute products in the country and 80 per cent of them are in small category.

About 40 million people are engaged in the jute sector in Bangladesh.

A total of 7.5 million bales of raw jute were produced in fiscal year 2017-18 and the production of jute goods stood at 1.1 million tonnes. Of the total, 0.89 million tonnes of jute goods were produced by the private sector.
