The country's national gas grid is set to receive an additional 5.0 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas from Kailashtila gas field starting next week.
This increase in gas supply follows a successful workover of the Kailashtila-1 well by the state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (BAPEX) this week.
State-owned Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL) hired BAPEX to carry out the workover to boost the field's overall natural gas output.
As a result of the workover, the total output of the Kailashtila field has increased to around 49 mmcfd, up from previous 44 mmcfd, said a senior SGFL official.
BAPEX initiated the workover of the Kailashtila-1 well on August 12.
Discovered in 1962, the Kailashtila gas field has been operational since 1983.
A couple of months ago, BAPEX discovered a new gas zone in Salda gas field in Brahmanbaria, sources said.
As of November 19, the country's overall gas output stands at approximately 2,634 mmcfd, which includes around 883 mmcfd of re-gasified imported LNG.
