Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL) on Wednesday inaugurated the drilling of an appraisal-cum-development well at the Kamta gas field.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) Anindya Islam Amit inaugurated the spud-in operation of Kamta Well No-2 at the well site.
Mohammad Mohsin, former secretary and chairman of the BGFCL Board of Directors, and Petrobangla Chairman Abdul Mannan attended the function as special guests.
Speaking as the chief guest, Mr Amit underscored the need to reduce foreign dependence and fully utilise domestic resources.
Currently, around 570 factories are waiting for gas connections, with investments worth billions of taka remaining stalled.
"If we can supply them with gas, millions of jobs will be created, helping to realise the state's trillion-dollar economy dream," he said.
"We want to reach a stage where there is no gap between demand and supply. We must work towards that goal," he added.
BGFCL Managing Director Abdul Jalil Pramanik and representatives of integrated drilling contractor CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Limited (CCDC) were also present at the function.
