The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against three engineers of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in Dhaka and a contractor for allegedly embezzling over Tk 12.2 million through 'forgery and abuse of official power'.
The accused are Md Bacchu Mia, Executive Engineer, LGED, Dhaka; Md Saber Ali, Senior Assistant Engineer; Md Shams Javed, Sub-Assistant Engineer; and Abu Sayed Khan, Proprietor of Messrs Nirman Prokousholi, said an ACC press release on Tuesday.
The case was filed at its Integrated District Office, Dhaka-1, under Penal Code sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471, and 109, as well as Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, it mentioned.
According to the allegations, the accused, in collusion, produced fake records in the official Measurement Book (MB) of a government project for the construction of Gabtoli Government Primary School in Mirpur, Dhaka.
They 'falsely' certified the completion of the building's third and fourth floors and approved bills amounting to Tk 12.21 million even though work had only progressed up to the second-floor columns.
During a site inspection, an ACC team confirmed the discrepancies between official documentation and actual construction progress.
The project was part of the government initiative titled "Establishment and Infrastructure Development including Beautification of Government Primary Schools in Dhaka city and Purbachal," with a total allocation of Tk 59.8 million.
An ACC spokesperson, however, said a detailed investigation is underway to identify whether any other officials were involved or not in the scheme.
