A Dhaka court on Friday placed former army officer Major General Ziaul Ahsan on eight-day remand in a case filed over the killing of hawker Md Shahjahan in New Market area of the capital during the anti-quota student movement.

Arfatul Rakib, judge of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka, passed the order after Sub-inspector Sajib Mia, the investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court with 10-day remand prayer.

Lawyer Nazneen Nahar stood for Ziaul, seeking his bail and cancellation of the remand petition. However, the court rejected her prayer and sent the accused to remand.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) claimed that on secret information, they arrested Ziaul, also former director general of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC), in Khilkhet area on Thursday night.

Later, he was shown arrested in the killing case filed with New Market Police Station.

Former law minister Anisul Huq and Salman F Rahman were shown arrested in the same case.

During the court hearing, Ziaul said, "I was picked up on 07 August. I was in the 'Aynaghar' for eight days. The 'Aynaghar' is not my creation. I am innocent. Nearly 70 per cent of my heart is blocked... I have never been to Dhanmondi. The NTMC provided only digital intelligence information. There has never been a case in my name before."

Earlier on August 6, the Bangladesh Army made a major reshuffle in its top posts with Major General Ziaul Ahsan, popularly known as Major Zia, being relieved from service and some others being reassigned, an ISPR press statement said.

He was earlier detained in dramatic circumstances around midnight the same day after the plane he was on board was brought back from the Dhaka airport runway to the boarding bridge.

Ziaul was replaced by Major General ASM Ridwanur Rahman as NTMC director general.

He had been serving as director general of NTMC since 2022. Before that, he was the director of that company.

Ziaul became the vice-captain of RAB-2 in 2009 when he was a major. In the same year, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and appointed director of the intelligence wing of the RAB headquarters.
