Mannan seeks financial support from int'l agencies for SDGs

Planning Minister MA Mannan has urged the development partners and international agencies to come up with financial and technical support to Bangladesh to fully implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to keep up the pace of socio-economic development, reports BSS.

Mannan said that a huge amount of fund would be needed to fully implement the SDGs by 2030.

The panning minister said this while presenting the country statement at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) held in New York on Wednesday, said a handout.

Mannan in his speech highlighted the progress of Bangladesh towards the efforts for implementing the SDGs under the farsighted leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

"On the whole, we're adopting our national development plans and thus implementing those taking alongside people from all classes so that every citizen can take part in the development efforts and thus enjoy the benefits of development," he added.

Quoting the projection of the IMF and the World Bank in 2019, Mannan said Bangladesh became one of the fastest growing economies in the world while the country attained over 7.0 per cent growth rate on a continuous basis despite global downtrend in GDP growth.

He also highlighted the aspirations of Bangladesh in the Forum regarding its Vision 2021 and the Vision 2041.

Mannan said utmost effective steps were being taken to attain the double digit growth rate by 2025 and reducing the income inequality.

He highlighted that the Awami League government put emphasis on standard education to ensure sustainable development and knowledge-based economy and education for females was given special importance to ensure gender parity at primary and secondary levels while the government has been implementing the 'Bangladesh Social Security Strategy' to provide improved social security to the citizens.

The planning minister said Bangladesh received inward remittance of $16.42 billion in the last fiscal year which also played an important role in strengthening the economic base of the country.

Side by side, he also mentioned the government's steps to create an investment-friendly environment, set up 100 economic zones across the country and expand ICT and youth-centric various development plans.
