Role during AL regime

Maritime secy resigns, appointment of ambassador cancelled

FE REPORT | October 07, 2024 00:00:00

Secretary of Maritime Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, Rear Admiral (Rtd) Khorshed Alam, the longest-serving official with a contractual appointment, resigned on Sunday.

Mr. Alam's resignation followed widespread criticism from influential quarters regarding his support for the previous regime led by Sheikh Hasina.

Mr. Khorshed was appointed as the head of the maritime wing of the foreign ministry in 2009 on a three-year contract after retiring from the Navy as a Commodore.

His contract was continuously renewed, and during that time, he was promoted to the position of secretary.

He was also promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral with retrospective effect, which is unusual.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the government cancelled the appointment of Khorshed Alam Khastogir as the new Ambassador to Poland.

This decision was made amidst reports that Mr. Khastogir had filed complaints with a Malaysian police station against students who organised protests against the Hasina government in Kuala Lumpur while he was the Deputy High Commissioner in the Bangladesh Mission there.
