FE Report | August 11, 2019 00:00:00

Prices of red meat and fragrant rice have increased notably in the city ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha festival to be celebrated across the country on Monday.

Many of meat shops remained closed on Saturday as traders were busy with cattle and rawhide trade which pushed up the prices of beef and mutton.

Beef was sold at Tk 580-Tk 620 a kg and mutton (khasi) at Tk 800-Tk 850 and other kinds of mutton at Tk 700-Tk 750 a kg on Saturday, up by Tk 40-Tk 50 in a week.

Md Sohel Rana, a meat trader at Rayer Bazar in the city, told the FE that he

slaughtered only one ox on the day against two to three on a normal occasion.

He said prices of sacrificial animals surged 30-40 per cent ahead of the festival.

He said most of the traders were busy doing seasonal cattle trade and a good number of them were looking to slaughter sacrificial animals on a contract basis.

He said a butcher could get 8.0 to 10 per cent of the price of a sacrificial animal by slaughtering it and making the meat ready.

He said meat sales would fall further in the kitchen market from Sunday (today).

Normal trade in meat will start a month later after the Eid as most of city refrigerators will be packed during the time.
