BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas is was under strict medical observation after undergoing a successful brain operation, while preparations were being made to take him abroad for advanced treatment, doctors said. He will be flown to Singapore by an air ambulance at 11:30 am today (Sunday) for better medical treatment.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Dr Shahabuddin Talukder of Evercare Hospital Dhaka said the BNP leader did not suffer any brain haemorrhage, but doctors detected an infection that required surgical intervention.
Sources at the BNP Media Cell said the CT scan results of Abbas were satisfactory.
However, the specialised medical facilities and continuous monitoring required for his recovery are limited in the country.
For that reason, his family members and party leaders were making arrangements to send him overseas for better medical support.
The BNP leader was admitted to Evercare Hospital in the city on March 11 after he suddenly fell ill and lost consciousness during iftar.
Following a medical board meeting on March 13, doctors decided to perform an emergency brain surgery on him.
After the procedure, Abbas was shifted to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit of the hospital for further observation.
