Law Advisor Asif Nazrul has protested a Facebook post by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which he referred to Bangladesh's victory over Pakistan in 1971 as "India's historic victory", reports bdnews24.com.

On Monday, Nazrul shared a screenshot of Modi's post on his verified Facebook account and wrote: "I strongly protest. Dec 16, 1971, was Bangladesh's victory day. India was an ally in this victory, nothing more."

Bangladesh marked the 53rd anniversary of its emergence on Monday as an independent nation after ending two decades of Pakistani rule.

In his post, the Indian prime minister said: "Today, on Vijay Diwas [Victory Day], we honour the courage and sacrifices of the brave soldiers who contributed to India's historic victory in 1971. Their selfless dedication and unwavering resolve safeguarded our nation and brought glory to us."

He added, "This day is a tribute to their extraordinary valour and their unshakable spirit. Their sacrifices will forever inspire generations and remain deeply embedded in our nation's history."

Attempts to reach Advisor Nazrul for comment on whether the interim government plans to issue a formal protest to India were unsuccessful.
