Motorists continue to suffer despite 'increased fuel supply'

April 21, 2026 00:00:00

FE REPORT

Long queues for fuel continued across the capital, Dhaka, on Monday, despite the government's move to supply additional diesel, petrol and octane to ease public suffering.

A visit by The Financial Express to filling stations in Motijheel, Rajarbagh, Gabtoli, Asad Gate, Malibagh and Moghbazar found vehicles -- including cars, motorbikes, buses and trucks -- lined up for hours to refuel, reflecting a situation largely unchanged from previous days.

Motorists were seen waiting for several hours, as supply disruptions continued to outpace demand at the retail level.

Petrol pump owners said the situation is unlikely to normalise until sufficient fuel reaches all stations across the city, even though depots have started releasing additional supplies.

"It will take several days before the situation returns to normal," said a pump operator, pointing to logistical delays in distribution.

At Malibagh Filling Station, queues stretched for several kilometres, while at Karim and Sons near Motijheel's Shapla Chattar, a long line of private vehicles and motorbikes extended from the Dainik Bangla intersection to near the Motijheel Metro Rail Station.

In Gabtoli, vehicles formed double lanes from Aminbazar Bridge to

Technical Crossing, causing severe traffic congestion on the main road. Although the queues appeared slightly shorter in the afternoon compared to earlier days, the pressure on supply remained evident.
