The National Citizen Party (NCP) - or Jatiya Nagorik Party- has intensified its political stance calling for swift trial of the July massacre, implementation of the July reform charter, and stronger measures to ensure women's safety in public places.

During a press conference on Friday, NCP Convener Nahid Islam emphasised that the party is prepared for the upcoming elections but stressed that certain conditions must be met first.

Mr Islam reiterated the party's demand for visible trials in connection with the July killings and immediate implementation of the reform charter before any national election takes place.

"We are ready for the election, but it should be preceded by judicial actions and the fulfillment of the July declaration," he said.

Mr Islam also said while it is not impossible to hold the national elections in December, it will largely depend on political consensus and the political will of all parties involved.

He noted that if a consensus is reached, it is possible to hold both the Constituent Assembly and national elections simultaneously within the expected timeframe.

The press conference, held at the NCP's Banglamotor office, followed the party's first general meeting, where different leaders discussed the ongoing political and social issues facing the nation.

Among the pressing concerns raised was spate of violence against women in Bangladesh, with Islam condemning recent incidents of eve-teasing, sexual assault, and rape across the country.

He urged the government to take immediate measures to ensure safety of women in public places and to expedite justice for victims.

"The government must take strict measures to ensure safety of women, and those responsible for these heinous crimes must be swiftly brought to justice," Mr Islam stressed.

He further criticised the current police administration, stating that it lacks the experience and capability to conduct free and fair elections.

"The law and order situation needs to be improved before the elections," he added.

The NCP also addressed the misuse of the title 'Somonnoyok' (Coordinator), which some individuals have been exploiting for illegal activities such as extortion and corruption.

Mr Islam declared that the title no longer holds validity and called for legal action against those who continue to use it for illicit purposes.

This stance reflects the party's commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring transparency in political and social matters.

To further strengthen its engagement with the public, NCP leaders announced plans for two iftar parties--one to be held at Suhrawardy Udyan on Monday with participation of those (from across the country) who were involved in the July-August movement, and another on Tuesday, inviting political parties, civil society, and key figures from various sectors.

As the NCP positions itself as a major political force, its recent remarks underscore its determination to push for systemic reforms, ensure justice for victims of violence, and eliminate corruption, all while preparing for the challenges of the upcoming elections.
