Anti-fascist protests

NCP denies chanting controversial slogans

FF REPORT | May 13, 2025 00:00:00

The National Citizens' Party (NCP) has denied allegations that its members raised controversial or anti-historical slogans during the recent anti-fascist protests by students and ordinary people.

In an official statement issued on Monday, the party clarified that none of its activists chanted party-centric or historically offensive slogans and blamed a specific group for attempting to derail the broader movement for national unity by injecting divisive narratives.

"We state unequivocally that no member of the NCP has raised any party slogan or slogans against the people's struggles and history during the recent movement. Therefore, the responsibility for any controversial slogans that have raised public concern lies solely with the party involved. Associating NCP with such acts is entirely baseless and unwarranted," it said.

"On the contrary, speeches and slogans by NCP members reflected the historical struggles of this land, notably the events of 1947, 1971, and 2024. We also observed that although one group objected during the singing of the national anthem, the protesters firmly proceeded with its performance," the statement stated.

The NCP reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the spirit of the country's landmark political historical moments-1947, 1971, and 2024-stating that respect for these historic milestones is a prerequisite for political engagement in Bangladesh.

It also urged all political forces, especially those accused of opposing the 1971 Liberation War or abetting atrocities, to clarify their positions and contribute constructively to national reconciliation and democratic transition.

"We are observing with deep concern that while various political parties, groups, factions, and ordinary students have spontaneously participated in the ongoing anti-fascist student-people's movement-demanding the declaration of the Awami League as a terrorist organisation, its ban, incorporation of party-based trial provisions under the International Crimes Tribunal Act, and issuance of the July Declaration-one particular group has deliberately raised party-centric and anti-historical slogans. This has disrupted the opportunity to renew national unity in the post-July political landscape."

The NCP urged all parties to act with foresight and responsibility for the bright and prosperous future of the people of Bangladesh.
