‘New industrial policy’ to unlock potential in areas

A top industrialist urged the government on Tuesday to engage stakeholders in formulating a new industrial policy to address problems facing the industrial sector.

"Engage all the stakeholders in framing a new and meaningful industrial policy," said Barrister Omar Sadat, president of Bangladesh-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BGCCI).

Addressing industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun who was present at the programme, he said there is immense potential of many industries including leather and pharmaceuticals, but the country couldn't utilise them for lack of meaningful policies.

He made the observations while speaking at a seminar on "Industrialisation in Bangladesh: The Next Level" organised by BGCCI.

Barrister Sadat also said Bangladesh is now at a crossroads.

With the formulation of industrial policy, Bangladesh will be able to achieve its goals, he said, adding that Germany is an important export-destination of Bangladesh.

"More and more German investors are coming in the country and we must ensure investment-friendly environment for them," he added.

Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) executive chairman Aminul Islam and National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, among others, were present at the programme.
